Efforts to protect the rights of transgender people

Spain is thoroughly committed to the protection of transgender rights. The Spanish government passed a law in 2007 that enables the change of sex and name in the civil registry.
This law was an historic landmark, as it recognizes transgender registration civil rights regardless of sex surgery, and it set a precedent for similar laws all over the world. Nowadays, more than ten Autonomous Communities have passed laws that ensure the protection of trans rights based on free election of gender.
